Geographical Story of NEPAL

Development region: Importance and Need
There are five development regions in Nepal. They are Eastern, Central, Western, Mid-Western and Far Western. There were only four development regions up to 1981. Then, Far Western region was divided into Mid-Western and Far-Western region. Each development region comprises of three different geographical regions, Hilly region and Terai region. Developmental activities are very difficult in the mountains and hills because the physical conditions are more difficult than the terai.
It is difficult and expensive to promote infrastructures like transportations, communications, hydro-power, drinking water and health in these regions. Since, the terai region is plain it is easier to run developmental works in comparison to other geographical region.
Dividing the country into five development regions has the following purposes:
Ø To make balanced development throughout the country.
Ø To provide administration facilities in regional level.
Ø To implement administrative and development activities with the concept of decentralization.
Ø To mobilize and utilize resources at local level.
Ø To promote national unity through participatory planning and development in a regional level.
