Eastern Development Region


The Eastern Development Region is located in the eastern part of Nepal. World’s highest peak Mt. Everest and third highest peak, Kanchhanjunga are in the northern part of this region. The hilly region is famous for rhododendron. Most of the plain area of this region is irrigated by Saptakosi river. This region receives more rainfall in summer season because the monsoon enters into Nepal from Bay of Bengal through this region.
The terai of this region is fertile. The main food cops and cash crops in this region are as follows:
Food crops:  Rice, Millet, Wheat, Maize, Potatoes etc.
Cash crops:   Sugarcane, Jute, Tea, Tobacco etc.
There are numbers of tea farms in this region. llam is famous for tea production.
The region has small, medium, and large scales industries. The Raghupati Jute Mill, the first industry in Nepal , was established in this region.
This region is inhabited by different castes, ethnic groups and tribes. They are mainly Rai, Limbu, Sherpa, Brahmin, Chhetrie, Newar, Rajbansi, Satar, Dhimal, Musahar, etc.
Sherpas are the world- famous for mountaineering.
